Billy Claiborne

A young gunslinger, possibly from the Arizona or New Mexico Territory , Claiborne began to make a name for himself demanding he be called Billy the Kid after William Bonney 's death in July 1881. Claiborne killed three men who laughed at his claim. Claiborne however was arrested for the death of the third man Jim Hickey and imprisoned at San Pedro , Arizona until broken out by Ike Clanton , Frank McLaury and Tom McLaury on October 22 , 1881 . Claiborne, who had been a cattle rustler with the Clantons, was readily enlisted as a confrontation with the Earps became iminent. During the gunfight four days later Claiborne was said to have fought less then admirably firing one or two wild shots toward Virgil Earp before fleeing toward C.S. Fly's photography studio. After escaping from Tombstone Claiborne disappeared for awhile before returning to Tombstone on November 14, 1882 where, while in the Oriental Saloon, he drunkenly demanded to be called Billy the Kid from gunfighter "Buckskin" Frank Leslie . Following Caiborne out into the street, Leslie killed Claiborne in the ensuing gunfight.
