Goa - Music and Dance
Music, dance and revelry course through the blood of the Goan community since time immemorial. The Goan people are a musical lot with almost every family laying claim to a musician family-member of some sort !
The music and dance of Goa are a rich cultural blend of the West with the East. The hold of rural music is strong in the less developed ares of the state, though the urban areas have shifted to more modern forms of music, one of which, Goa Trance has made an impact worldwide.
Goa Trance is a vibrant and psychedelic dance music that is best enjoyed on the dance drug LSD and is a powerful and kaleidoscopic tapestry of sound.
Goa also has a rich dance tradition. The most popular folk dance forms of Goa are Fugdi & Dhalo that are performed by women. The Kunbi dance is a tribal a group dance-cum-song that is rustic and has been passed down for generations.
Dekni is performed only by women and displays a rare and perfect blending of the Indian with the Western rhythms. During Navratra, the Dhangar Dance is performed with great vigour and devotion. The Lamp dance is performed during the Shigmo festival by women holding lamps on their heads.
Morulem is a traditional folk dance that is performed by the backward community, again during the Shigmo festival. Zagor is a cultural activity where folk plays are presented in different villages of Goa by the Gawda community. There are also plenty of discotheques where youngsters and the old alike can dance with free abandon!
